‘As soon as the Israelite army saw him, they began to run away in fright.’
1 Samuel 17:24
When Saul’s army faced Goliath in the Valley of Elah, they weren’t just physically stuck in trenches; they were locked in a mental prison. For forty days, morning and evening, the giant walked out and shouted threats. Scripture says that whenever the Israelites saw the man, “they all fled from him in great fear”
An entire army of God’s people had their destiny and vision, their hopes and dreams neutralized by fear because they allowed the enemy’s voice to become the loudest sound in their valley.
To this army, fear became a collective habit.
The shift happens when David arrives. He doesn’t look at the giant’s stature; he looks at the giant’s spiritual standing—calling him an “uncircumcised Philistine” who is defying the armies of the living God. David changed the narrative by changing who he was listening to. To become a brave man or woman, you will have to stop managing the fear in the trench and start silencing the voice that put you there. If you cannot shift the voice that puts you there, you will most likely remain there.
