5 DAYS PRAYER & FASTING

2 Stripping Saul’s Armour

Shedding the Fear of Man

BIBLE TRUTH

‘Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again.’ 1 Samuel 17:38-39 NLT

REFLECTION

Before David walked out to face the giant, Saul tried to dress him in his own heavy armour: a bronze helmet, a coat of mail, and a massive sword. David put them on, tried to walk, and realized instantly it was a trap. He told Saul, “I cannot go in these, because I am not used to them”. So he took them off.

Saul’s armour represents the weight of human expectation, religious formality, and relying on someone else’s methods instead of God’s unique design for you.

Saul was a king driven by the fear of man, he cared more about looking good in front of the crowd than obeying God. If David had fought in Saul’s armour, he would have been fighting with Saul’s insecure spirit and if by any chance David had won, Saul would have tried to accredit himself with the victory. Interestingly enough, Saul did not trust his own armour to walk out and fight in it but he wanted David to use it.

To become a mighty warrior of valour, you have to strip off the heavy, ill-fitting gear of people-pleasing, cultural comparison, and worldly strategies and assumptions. Your breakthrough won’t come from acting like someone else; it comes from standing completely secure in who God created *you* to be.

PRAYER FOCUS

  • Pray that God will break the fear of man in our lives and community and we’ll be delivered from the need for toxic human validation, the fear of rejection, and the anxiety of trying to live up to others’ expectations. Ask God to sever any emotional strings that keep you bound to seeking people’s approval over His.
  • Pray for God’s forgiveness for trying to fight spiritual battles with natural, fleshly methods—like manipulation, striving in your own strength, or copying the world’s ways of finding security. Ask God for his insight to use his divine power to demolish strongholds
  • Pray for absolute confidence in your unique identity, calling, and spiritual gifting. Ask the Holy Spirit to sharpen your specific “five smooth stones”—the precise tools, testimonies, and graces He has uniquely trusted to your hands.
